Article and Preposition

An article is a word used to modify a noun, which is a person, place, object, or idea. There are three types of articles- a, an, and the. In other words, the article is always used with nouns.

A preposition is a word or phrase that is used before a noun or pronoun to show place, time, or direction. Eg:- in, at, on, to, for, etc

(1) SriLanka is ……………… island. ( Article)

Ans: Sri Lanka is an island.

More example:- I ate an apple

Articles can be definite and indefinite. “a” an” are called indefinite and “the” is called indefinite. For example, ‘Please call a boy’. Here he requests to call a boy that can be anyone. Look at another sentence:- ‘Please call the boy’. Here he requests to call a specific boy.

The article ‘an’ is used before the words beginning with a vowel (a, e, i, o, u). This is the easiest way to identify an article, but on some occasions, it goes wrong. The proper way to identify a suitable article is to look at the initial sound in a word.

We use the article “a” before consonant sounds (singular countable noun) For example, “I really want to buy a dog’

Ans: Let us discuss the matter seriously

Which is the longest river in India?

Explanation:- Nouns with superlative adjectives usually have the article “the”

Rahul is the tallest of the five brothers

He is the best student in the college

You are the most handsome man in the college.

He was born in a small village in Punjab.
